Yoshi Game by Nintendo Reviewed by Chris Read www.freewebs.com/smb1/ | chrisdread@aol.com Save: none Released: July 1992 Rated: N/A (Released before rating system. Most likely an E rating.) Works with: Every Game Boy, not on DS Quick Opinion: Rent **************************************************************************** Opening Snide Remarks: A puzzle game with Yoshi? Any character could fit. But people probably bought it because of the fact Yoshi is in it. Is it a good buy? **************************************************************************** Gameplay Description: This is a puzzle game where there are two objectives. In Type A, the goal is to get the highest score. In Type B, the goal is to clear the screen. Various Mario enemies come down onto four plates, like Tetris. But not like Tetris, you can't move the enemies. Instead, you move the plates. If two enemies touch vertically, they disappear. Sometimes, egg tops and egg bottoms fall down. You can sandwich enemies between the eggs, but it has to be bottom piece, enemies, top piece. If a top piece falls down with no bottom piece, it disappears by itself. Liked: Interesting way to manipulate pieces. Hated: Not being able to move the enemies. **************************************************************************** Graphics Description: For a Game Boy game, pretty good. Enemies look just like their NES versions. Yoshi looks good. Liked: They used the retro versions of enemies. Hated: When you press Pause, the enemies so far on the plates disappear. **************************************************************************** Sound/Music Description: The title screen song is good, and so are the three choices for background playing music, but your best bet, like all puzzle games, is the off option. Liked: Title screen music. Hated: Why not use classic Mario songs for background music? **************************************************************************** Play Control/Game Design: One thing bugs me about the game design. I press the lowest possible settings. Then, sometimes, instead of two enemies coming down at the same time, three do. And then sometimes, they come down faster. Both of these happen about five times, and it sort of screws up the rhythm you have going. It makes me wonder "Didn't I choose the lowest possible settings?" Other than that, pretty responsive play control. You may have to get used to not moving the enemies, but the plates instead. The buttons all work fine. Liked: No delay for button pushing. Hated: The part where the game forgets what I said about being on the lowest possible settings for a few drops. **************************************************************************** Improve: Put Mario tunes as background music, put the enemies so far in when you press Pause, always have two enemies come down at the same time. RIYL: Kirby's Star Stacker, Tetris 2 **************************************************************************** Final Words: Not a bad game, but it could have been better. **************************************************************************** Score Gameplay: **** Graphics: **** Sound/Music: ** Play Control/Game Design: *** Personal Opinion: **** Total: 68% Final Score: 68% **************************************************************************** Currently Known Codes: none
